Slipping Away
for a Grandmother, her Daughter and her Granddaughter
Created by Alice Chance for Infinity for Dinner.
The ingredients for Slipping Away are simple: a family of women singing the same words together in harmony. Yet these ingredients sustain a work which, in theory, could continue to evolve forever. Individual recordings of these women play on an infinite loop while little differences in the lengths of the clips ensure they gradually slip out of phase. Mothers and daughters slipping away from each other is a part of life, whether through growing up, moving away or passing away. It can be barely perceptible. It can be hugely painful. And sometimes, even though neither party wants it to happen, it still does.
